ABOUT ME

Safiyat Aminu is a contemporary fine art photographer. Born in Lagos, Nigeria, she lived there until the age of eight before moving to Chicago, Illinois. Safiyat completed her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art at Cornell College with distinguished honors.

During her adolescent years, she enjoyed watching Disney and Nickelodeon shows. With the rise of the internet and social media, she found an escape in YouTube videos, which felt far removed from her reality. The lack of representation of people who looked like her in creative spaces drives her artistic practice.

From an early age, Safiyat engaged in various art forms. She loved making videos where she took on the roles of writer, director, editor, and camera operator—a true one-woman show. Beyond video-making, she explored singing, fashion design, modeling, acting, and a range of other creative pursuits.

Despite uncertainty about pursuing a creative career, Safiyat always knew her passion lay in the arts. While her peers discussed futures in medicine, law, and finance, she remained committed to her creative aspirations. Choosing to study Studio Art was the best decision she ever made. At Cornell, she explored various mediums with exceptional support from the art department faculty, ultimately solidifying photography as her primary focus.
